On Tuesday 15th October 2024, the National Assembly of Seychelles commemorated Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a presentation given by Programme Manager at the Ministry of Health Ms. Gina Michel, and Nurse Ms. Lindsey Marengo to raise awareness on the subject.

Various Members of the Women's Parliamentary Caucus attended the presentation, including Chairperson Hon. Regina Esparon, Hon. Kelly Samynadin, Hon. Doyace Porice, Hon. Desheila Bastienne, and Hon. Rachel Spiro. Other attendees of the presentation included the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Hon. Gervais Henrie, Leader of the Opposition Hon. Sebastien Pillay, Hon. Michel Roucou, Hon. Andy Labonte, National Assembly Service staff, and select invited guests.

The event opened with a brief welcome and introduction by the National Assembly Senior Health and Safety Officer Mr. Christopher Confait. The talk then began with an explanation of what cancer is, a discussion surrounding breast cancer and how the chance of developing it can be minimised, as well as the importance of continuous detection exercises and screening. Ms. Michel also discussed the expense of cancer treatment, and the various statistics collected on cancer-related issues in Seychelles. The seminar concluded with a Q&A session in which attendees were able to clarify points raised throughout the presentation.

Such activities aim to promote vital, often life-saving advice, on cancer detection and preventative measures, as well as raising awareness on the challenges faced by breast cancer survivors in Seychelles.

The National Assembly remains committed to supporting the cause of Cancer Awareness in Seychelles. Members of Cancer Concern Association Seychelles were also invited to attend the Sitting on the same morning of Tuesday 15th, during which Hon. Esparon and Hon. Spiro gave dedicated statements in commemoration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2024.
