The President of the Republic of Seychelles H.E. Mr. Wavel Ramkalawan delivered the Message on the State of the Nation Address, also known as SONA, this afternoon Thursday 27th February 2025 at 1700hrs. For the first time in history, the SONA was signed live in Seychellois Sign Language (SSL) by the Association for People with Hearing Impairment (APHI).

The President highlighted several critical national issues, emphasizing the government's commitment to reducing unemployment rates through job creation and economic initiatives. He also addressed the growing challenge of drug trafficking and the influx of illicit substances via ocean routes, outlining stricter enforcement measures to combat this threat. Additionally, he reaffirmed the nation's dedication to safeguarding Seychelles' territorial integrity, including its vast marine territories. These efforts aim to strengthen national stability, protect citizens, and preserve the country's natural resources for future generations.

The Hon. Speaker thanked the President for sharing his vision for the continued development of Seychelles and noted the potential for legislative debates on the critical issues raised. Hon. Mancienne then extended a special thanks to APHI for the live translation of SSL, remarking on the importance of raising the accessibility of the proceedings of the Assembly.

The Replies to SONA will begin on Tuesday 4th March 2025, with the Leader of the Opposition Hon. Sebastien Pillay. This will be followed by the Leader of Government Business Hon. Bernard Georges. All other Members of the National Assembly will respond subsequently, on the 5th and 6th of March 2025.

Preceding the SONA, and in accordance with Article 81 (1)(h)(i) of the Constitution of Seychelles, Hon. Cecile Larsen (US), Hon. Valdana Sultan (LDS), and Hon. Gerard Bijoux (LDS) took their Oaths as new Proportionately Elected Members during the Opening Ceremony of the National Assembly.
