On Thursday 17th October 2024, a delegation of the Islands Development Company (IDC) comprised of CEO Mr. Glenny Savy, Deputy CEO Mr. Christian Lionnet, and Public Relations Manager Mr. Michael Govinden, met with the Food Security and Sustainable Development Committee (FSSD). The Committee was represented by Chairperson Hon. Flory Larue, Hon. Francois Adelaide, Hon. Norbert Loizeau, Hon. Regina Esparon, and Hon. John Hoareau. Assistance was provided by Committee Secretary Mrs. Gillian Samson, and Assistant Committee Secretary Ms. Cosette Songoire.
The purpose of the meeting was for the FSSD Committee to gain insights into the ongoing developments on Assomption Island, as well as receive any pertinent updates on any developments within the Aldabra Group which consists of the Aldabra Atoll, Cosmoledo Atoll, Astove Island, and Assomption Island. CEO Mr. Savy gave a detailed presentation on the history of Assomption Island, including a historical overview of the environmental damage that has taken place, the previous resource exploitation, and statistics on the levels of rainfall and arable land. It was noted that Assomption Island has the potential for ‘adventure tourism’, a niche market segment which involves exploration, physical activity, and often situated in remote areas of natural beauty.
Discussions were centered on the capacity for increased domestic tourism, such as the development of approximately 37 guest villas, 3 dedicated IDC guesthouses, an improved airstrip, and other vital structures such as sewerage and solar panels. Due to the water table of Assomption being 100% salinated water, it was noted that all water used on the island will be processed through desalination plants and reused wherever possible.
The Committee then had the opportunity to question the delegation on various aspects of the development plan and presentation, such as the commitment of IDC to facilitate the travel and accommodation for Seychellois residents should they desire to visit the Aldabra Group. The delegation assured the Committee that provisions would be made available subject to demand, allowing for any Seychellois person to visit the islands without restrictions. Chairperson Hon. Larue then inquired into the potential challenges surrounding environmentally-friendly practices, biosecurity and contamination, as well as the costs involved for residents to make the voyage to Assomption.
The meeting then came to a close with Hon. Larue thanking the IDC delegation for their forthcoming discussions on the developments, calling for the continued positive relationship with the FSSD Committee in future.
