The Seychelles delegation of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) attended the official opening of the 3rd Ordinary Session of the Sixth Parliament in Midrand South Africa from the 24th of June to the 5th of July 2024. The delegation was headed by Hon. Terence Mondon, and comprised of Hon. Sylvanne Lemiel, Hon. Wavel Woodcock and Hon. Conrad Gabriel, accompanied by Desk Officer Ms. Georgina Balette.
The session was held under the African Union theme "Educate an African fit for the 21st Century: Building resilient education systems for increased access to inclusive, lifelong, quality, and relevant learning in Africa”. The Pan-African Parliament President H.E Chief Fortune Charumbira launched the official opening of the session, acknowledging the guest of honor the President of the Arab Parliament Hon. Adel Bin Abdulrahman Alasoomi, and Her Excellency Ambassador Marie-Antoinette Rose Quatre in her capacity as the CEO of the Africa Peer Review Mechanism.
Members attended the Regional Caucus Meetings for the Eastern Caucus, chaired by Hon. Mondon, and their respective Committee meetings to consider their agendas and adoption of their reports for presentation. Presentations and deliberations on “unpacking the issue of Pan-Africanism”, the role of the Pan-African Parliament, performance reviews, PAP Activities, and Budget. Different presenters also tabled Reports including the 14th Conference on Women's Rights; the Draft Model Law on Cooperatives; Climate Change; Regional Parliamentary Conference on Governance; and the promotion of the ratification, domestication, and implementation of AU instruments and shared values. Discussions also included the draft Model Law on Gender Equality and Equity in Africa, and Members participated in the seminar for “Enhancing African Family Values to Achieve Citizens’ Socioeconomic Protection and Security”, and the seminar on “Strengthening the Scientific base of Traditional Medicine through the Research and Innovation Committee on Health”.
Hon. Wavel Woodcock, in his capacity as 4th Vice-President of the Caucus on Youth, also presented the activity report of the Caucus, urging more youth to become engaged and strive to become members of parliament. The session ended with Presentation and adoption of the final resolutions and recommendations.
