As part of his role as Branch Representative of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Africa Region, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Gervais Henrie was recently in Accra, Ghana to attend the region’s 82nd Executive Committee Meeting.The week-long programme of meetings started on the 3rd and ended on 10th March and was attended by Members of Parliament and Legislative officers from the national parliaments of Commonwealth countries in the Africa region.

The Executive Committee met to discuss various issues of relevance to African countries, such as:

● The continuous strides made by Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) to address issues facing African women; particularly those related to social, economic, political, justice and development.

● The role of CPA Africa Region’s member countries in promoting democracies and coming up with solutions fit for Africa and its people.

● The authority and jurisdiction of parliament as it adjusts from the devastating effects of Covid-19 and seeking solutions that will move Africa forward.

The CPA African Region comprises of 63 national and sub-national legislatures. The grouping is governed by a Coordinating Committee and Executive Committee which is made up of representatives from across the continent. There is also a Regional Representative Committee which reports to the Executive Committee.

The meeting was also attended by high-profile representatives from CPA International.
