Friday 23rd July marks the first day of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association UK’s (CPA UK) Post Election Seminar with the National Assembly of Seychelles.

Following the 2020 General Election, the Seminar is an opportunity for new and returning Members and Clerks to further develop the skills needed to perform their roles effectively through the sharing of knowledge and good practice.

Hon.
This Seminar will also strengthen ties between the National Assembly and the UK Parliament, building on the visit of a CPA UK Delegation to the Seychelles in February 2019. The parliamentary visit explored the UK and Seychelles’ mutual interests in promoting political participation among young people, tackling climate change through a ‘Blue Economy’, and strengthening oversight and scrutiny functions of the respective legislatures.

The Post-Election Seminar, which took place virtually today, will continue the mutual exchange of ideas. It opened with an address from the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Roger Mancienne, and the Rt Hon. Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the Speaker of the UK House of Commons. Seminar attendees then explored a diverse range of topics, including the opportunities and challenges of being a newly elected parliamentarian, the legislative process, and budget and financial scrutiny.

Hon.
The National Assembly’s Speaker, Hon. Roger Mancienne stated:
“We welcome this Post-Election Seminar and the learning opportunities it will bring for Members and Clerks of the National Assembly. We look forward to an insightful exchange of expertise that will benefit both sides and highlight the immense benefits of the continued friendship between our legislatures.”

Hon.
Two further days of the Seminar are planned for September.
