On the morning of Thursday 11th of July 2024, the High-Commissioner of the Republic of Mozambique to Seychelles H.E. Ms. Maria Manuela dos Santos Lucas, paid a Courtesy Call to the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Hon. Gervais Henrie. The Deputy Speaker was accompanied by the Deputy Clerk to the National Assembly Ms. Alexandria Faure. Second Secretary to the Embassy of the Republic of Mozambique Mr. Salvador Chauque was also present.

The Deputy Speaker welcomed the delegation to the National Assembly, expressing that it was a great pleasure to reestablish the long-standing ties between Mozambique and Seychelles. Her Excellency Mrs. dos Santos Lucas thanked the Hon. Deputy Speaker and remarked that Mozambique and Seychelles have various existing projects and areas of mutual interest to develop. An area of major importance is that of marine security, particularly the increase in drug trafficking and smugglers via fishing routes.

The High-Commissioner also took the opportunity to relay the well wishes and congratulations on behalf of the President of Mozambique, on the auspicious occasion of the 48th anniversary of the independence of Seychelles. It was noted that Mozambique shares a similar date of independence, 25th June, bringing the historical relationship of the two countries closer together. The Hon. Deputy Speaker thanked the High-Commissioner for the message, remarking that the two countries also share a positive parliamentary relationship due to their participation in various mutual forums such as the SADC Parliamentary Forum, Pan-African Parliament, and Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. Hon. Henrie called for more exchanges and discussions on the legislative level, as well as more opportunities to discuss issues of national importance such as agriculture and fisheries.
