On the morning of Wednesday 11th December 2024, a delegation comprised of various representatives of the Electoral Commissions Forum of SADC Countries (ECF-SADC) paid a Courtesy Call on the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Hon. Gervais Henrie, accompanied by Clerk Mrs. Tania Isaac. The delegation is currently engaged in the 26th Annual General Conference (AGC) of the ECF-SADC which is being hosted by the Electoral Commission of Seychelles (ECS). Representing the ECS was Chairperson Mr. Danny Lucas, alongside Chief Electoral Officer Mrs. Manuella Amesbury, amongst a number of Commissioners.
Hon. Deputy Speaker opened the meeting by thanking the delegation for their time and efforts in visiting the National Assembly and recognizing it as a vital legislative body that contributes to the continuation of strong democratic values in Seychelles. The theme of the Conference, “Digitalization and Youth participation in electoral processes in the SADC Region”, was discussed as Hon. Henrie inquired about the trends of youth voting and political participation. Chairpersons of South Africa, Mozambique, and Zambia gave their insights into the programs and research done into the voting habits of the younger generation, and what steps were being proposed to reinvigorate such interest. The challenge of digitalization was also discussed, with the Deputy Speaker noting that as the generations advance, technology must also advance alongside. The future of digital voting was voiced as a possibility to improve accessibility and garner interest, however its security challenges were duly noted.
Mr. Lucas extended his sincerest thanks on behalf of the delegation for the opportunity to convene at the National Assembly, emphasizing its importance as the house of the voices of the people. As a fundamental component of democratic governance in Seychelles, the good relations between the ECS & ECF-SADC and the National Assembly were strongly reaffirmed.
Hon. Henrie thanked the delegation for the fruitful discussion, and wished them well in their ongoing presentations and deliberations.
