The director of the Seychelles Law Commission, Mr. Yohan Liyanage met with the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Roger Mancienne on Friday 31st May 2024. The Speaker was accompanied by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Mrs. Tania Isaac and the Deputy Clerk, Ms. Alexandria Faure.
Speaker Mancienne welcomed the Mr. Liyanage to Parliament and discussed further matters pertaining to avenues of collaboration that could be explored between the National Assembly and the Law Commission. The director further highlighted the role of the Commission and the current ongoing work which is taking place which involves consolidating all the laws of Seychelles. Mr. Liyanage explained that alongside consolidating the laws, as an advisory body the Commission will also be monitoring and reviewing the laws of Seychelles followed by submitting recommendations. Despite the human resource challenges, the Commission faces Mr. Liyanage is positive that the meeting it’s a first step towards working close with the National Assembly to enhance its legislative role whilst respective the independence and diverse mandates of both institutions.
Mr. Liyanage proposed a sensitisation meeting with all Members of the National Assembly to situate the Law Commission in the legislative process and at the same time address any misconceptions on the Commissions mandate.
The Clerk, Mrs. Tania Isaac welcomed the propositions for further collaboration especially mentioning areas of common interest within the Department of Legal & Research Services of the National Assembly Service. There was consensus for immediate engagement by a follow up visit of the Legal Advisor to the National Assembly to the Law Commission chamber. Mr. Liyanage and the Speaker spoke of many topics relating to constitutional law and the importance of the consolidation of the laws of the country, also agreeing on continuing the dialogue and strengthening the collaboration.
