Ms. Lisa Singh, United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator for Mauritius and Seychelles, paid a Courtesy Call on Speaker Hon. Roger Mancienne on Thursday 9th March 2023. Hon. Mancienne was accompanied by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Mrs. Tania Isaac and the Deputy Clerk, Ms. Alexandria Faure. Ms. Singh was accompanied by the Coordination Officer for the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in Seychelles, Mr. Alexander Mancham. Ms. Singh began by introducing herself and the work of the UN in the region, which included promoting the 2030 Agenda and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The discussion centered on taking a Seychelles-centric approach to solving problems such as food security, climate resilience, and motivating Seychellois youth to take up employment in more advanced and developing industries.
Hon. Mancienne highlighted that the National Assembly would like to become more involved in the discussions surrounding green energy, environmental development, border security, and maritime safety. Seychelles is in a state of transition regarding the education system. In a moment of reflection on the state of the country after the COVID-19 pandemic, Hon. Mancienne made it known that Seychelles had achieved what many countries could not regarding preparedness and quick decision-making.
Ms. Singh commented that Seychelles is an inspiration to the continent in terms of not just beauty, but also peaceful democracy and economic awareness. Particularly, the ability for the country to reestablish income streams and reopen borders after the rapid spread of COVID-19. Ms. Singh noted that she looked forward to continuing the engagement and coordination between the Seychelles and the UN.
