The Communicable Diseases, HIV/AIDS, and SRHR Committee of the National Assembly of Seychelles organised a brief ceremony and exhibition in honour of World AIDS Day, observed on Sunday 1st December 2024.
Committee Member Hon. François Adelaide delivered the introductory remarks to commence the programme. He emphasised the importance of commemorating this day, particularly as a Parliament, to demonstrate its commitment to raising awareness on this vital subject. Following the opening remarks, Speaker of the National Assembly Hon. Roger Mancienne lit a candle as a symbol of solidarity and continuity. The candle then remained lit for the rest of the day.
During the event Mr. Reginald Hoareau, and his spouse Mrs. Laeticia Hoareau, shared their personal story and expressed gratitude to the National Assembly for providing them with this platform. Mr. Hoareau, who is living with HIV, spoke about the significant impact of discrimination on his mental health, particularly against individuals and organisations, including insurance companies. He highlighted the importance of having a strong support system, which he has found in his family. Mrs. Hoareau reinforced her husband's remarks by stressing the need to support people living with HIV, who often face stigma and emotional challenges. Whilst explaining she noted that it is possible for a person living with HIV to have a normal family life if they are taking their medications; doing so results in an undetectable viral load, meaning the virus cannot be passed on to partners and/or children during pregnancy. She also advocated for greater educational initiatives aimed at young people to raise awareness about HIV and other STDs.
Following the ceremony, all attendees were invited to view relevant educational resources on sexual health and HIV/AIDS, as part of a brief exhibition.
