Today we take a moment to revisit one of the highlights of the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus (WPC) this year. On Friday 23rd June, the WPC visited Plaisance Secondary School and engaged with a group of enthusiastic students. The students selected to meet the WPC mostly formed part of the Duke of Edinburgh program and the President’s Award Program.
A presentation was given on societal issues and pressures such as drug use by parents, bullying in schools, support for troubled children, and counselling opportunities for semi-orphaned children. The following interactive session allowed for the young adults to question the parliamentarians on the ways in which parliamentary business is carried. Questions ranged from the difficulties when approving a Law, to how ‘arguments’ are controlled in the Chamber.
The WPC shed some light on the decorum of the House, how debates proceed, and the important work of parliamentary Committees.
The WPC took this opportunity to empower the young girls present to become future leaders and encouraged them to consider a career in the political sphere.
