The Finance and Public Accounts Committee (FPAC) met with the Anti-Corruption Commission of Seychelles (ACCS) on the morning of Friday 6th of June 2023. The FPAC, chaired by the Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Sebastien Pillay, were focused primarily on topics related to the ACCS’ functions, operations, and current challenges being faced.
The Commissioner of the ACCS, Ms. May De Silva, accompanied by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. Dennis Joubert provided the members detailed information about the ACCS’ role in terms of detection, investigation, and prevention, responding to queries made by Committee Members at several points during the discussion. Ms. De Silva explained the current challenges being faced by the ACCS which mainly concern staffing, specialized training, capacity building, and budgetary constraints. Elaborating on staffing concerns, Ms. De Silva highlighted the importance of guiding more youth toward the study of forensic financial accounting as it is one of the crucial areas of expertise required by the ACCS.
Several recommendations were made, and assurances of further joint meetings with other institutions were given after the fruitful discussions.
