The 24th Conference of Speakers & Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) was officially opened this morning in the presence of around 50 Speakers and Presideing Officers and the President of the Republic of Seychelles, H.E Mr Danny Faure as the guest of honor at the Savoy Hotel.
The Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Patrick Pillay welcomed the delegates and encouraged them to experience the Seychelles and our unique culture whilst they are attending the Conference. As the Guest of Honour for the Opening Ceremony of the Conference, President Danny Faure officially addressed the Delegates highlighting the value of the Commonwealth and the importance of Parliaments in the development of free and democratic societies. The Opening Ceremony started with the official Speakers Procession led by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Patrick Pillay and the Sergeant at Arms.
The CSPOC conference brings together the Speakers and Presiding Officers of 22 bicameral parliaments and 30 unicameral parliaments – a total of 74 members from 52 nations. During the next few days the Speakers from the National Assemblies & Senates of the Commonwealth countries will be participating in Working Sessions and Plenaries, focusing on different topics of discussions on matters of Parliament. Every two years the Commonwealth countries hold a conference, bringing together the Speakers and Presiding Officers of the national Parliaments of the sovereign states of the Commonwealth.
The conference is an independent group which aims to maintain, foster and encourage impartiality and fairness on part of the Speakers and Presiding Officers of the parliaments. The Conference provides a forum for the sharing and of parliamentary best practices and fruitful collaborations across national parliaments of the Commonwealth States.
The National Assembly of Seychelles is hosting the 24th Conference for the Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth from the 8th – 13th of January at the Savoy Hotel.
