The Members of the Committee on Government Assurances have today hosted Members of the Executive to an Orientation Meeting at the National Assembly building. The meeting which was aimed at enhancing better communication and cooperation between the two branches of Government saw the participation of 10 Ministers and their Personal Assistants.
In his welcoming remark, the Chairperson of the Committee, Hon. Gervais Henrie stated that “this meeting will allow the Committee to build a working relationship with Ministries and this face to face contact is critical at this early stage of the year since both sides are constantly communicating with each other”.
He further emphasized that the recent restructuring within the Executive and appointment of new Members of the Committee necessitated this interaction.
The Committee on Government Assurances scrutinizes assurances, undertakings and promises pronounced by Ministers during Question Time, presentation of Bills and Statements. The Committee recently amended its Procedure Manual to also include the scrutiny of promises and undertakings made by the President including the State of the Nation Address.
Amongst the issues discussed were verbatim extracts, assurances made by Chief Executive Officers during consideration of the Appropriation Bill and the Committee’s Procedure Manual.
“The meeting was fruitful and the Ministers made some valuable recommendations that will be considered by the Committee to make it more effective as an oversight structure of the National Assembly”, said Hon. Henrie.
