The Speaker of the National Assembly of Seychelles is the Honorable Speaker, Mr. Nicholas Prea.
Born on 7th of March 1965, Hon. Nicholas Gerard Prea was elected Speaker of the National Assembly of Seychelles on 6th March 2018 after serving as Deputy Speaker of the 6th Assembly from September 2016. He is also serving his third mandate as the elected Member for the Bel Ombre constituency.
Hon. Prea made his official debut in Parliament in 2002 when he was elected to represent the Bel Ombre Constituency for a 5 year mandate and was re-elected in 2007. In 2011 he stood as the Vice-Presidential candidate for the Seychelles National Party (SNP).
Educated in Seychelles from 1972 to 1985 he went from primary to secondary at Seychelles College. Hon. Prea’s professional life began in 1985 where he joined Cable & Wireless (Seychelles) Ltd as a Telecom Technician. He attended further training in Telecommunications Engineering at the Cable & Wireless Telecom College in Cornwall, England in 1987 and 1989. In 1990 he followed a course in Advanced Telecom & Fibre Optics at the British Telecom College in Staffordshire, Birmingham. After a short spell in the UK he returned to Seychelles and worked for 3 years at the Ministry of Health before joining Medent Services, a Private Specialised Dental Clinic as Manager. In 2000 he joined Mason’s Travel hotel chain as Assistant Manager and also served as member of the Public Service Appeal Board till 2002.
In the Assembly, he has served on various Committees namely International Affairs Committee, the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (Seychelles Branch), Member of the Working Party for Economic Partnership Agreement and WTO Negotiating Team. In the 6th Assembly he serves as a Member of the Bills Committee, Truth & Reconciliation Committee, Member of the Standing Orders Committee, Chair of the CPA and Chair of the Reform & Modernization Committee.
Being a former sportsman, Hon. Prea still enjoys sports and is also a keen environmentalist.
