IMF MISSION MEETS WITH COMMITTEES OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY
The Committee of Chairpersons and the Finance & Public Accounts Committee of the National Assembly met, this morning, with the IMF mission currently in the country. The Committees held lengthy discussions with the IMF delegation who briefed the Members on the current status of discussions with regards to a new follow up programme under the extended fund.
The IMF’s head of mission, Mr. Marshal Mills, provided in depth information and views on the country’s current economic situation, the developments made by the country and the impressive increase in reserves recorded.
Discussions were also held on the role of parastatals, particularly the risks posed of expanding activities of such organizations and the necessity to ensure oversight to guarantee that activities undertaken are sustainable and does not represent a risk to public finances.
The Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Dr. Patrick Herminie, who directed the meeting, commented that the meeting was a very fruitful one and should help to ensure that Parliamentarians are up to date on latest information, to allow them to make better informed decisions in the passage of Bills related to the follow up program under the extended fund.
