Visit at the Paediatric Ward
The Committee made a visit at the Paediatric Ward, Seychelles Hospital, on 1st June, 2012, on the occasion of the International Day for Children. The hon’ble members interacted with the children as well as their parents and offered the children small tokens.
Family Budgetary Sessions
The Committee also organized in collaboration with NATCOF a financial education and family budgetary session on Praslin and La Digue from 24th to 26th August, 2012. The aim of the activity was to help families better manage their budget given the rise in the cost of living.
Talk on Teenage pregnancy
The Committee in collaboration with the Ministry of Health conducted two half day talks at Plaisance and Pointe Larue School with the Secondary students. The aims of the talks were to explore the young peoples’ knowledge and understanding on unplanned pregnancies and its consequences. The committee also sensitized the students on the local situation regarding certain risky behaviours and its consequences such as HIV/AIDS. Misconceptions were also addressed among youths on teenage pregnancy and other related health issues.
Visit to the Montagne Posee Prison
On 20th December, 2012 the Committee along with other women parliamentarians made a visit to the Montagne Posee Prison. The aim of the visit was to interact with the women inmates and hampers were distributed to all women inmates for the festive season.
The women parliamentarians also had the chance to discuss pertinent issues of the welfare and environment of the inmates with Superintendent Tirant who is the administrator of the prison. The Committee pledged that the prison visit will remain on their calendar of activities in 2013.
Local and International workshops
The members attended local workshops organized by different agencies and departments like the Women in Action: Solidarity Organization (WASO).
The Chairperson, Hon. J. Charles and Hon. M. Marie attended the Commonwealth Women Parliamentary Workshop on the engagement to underscore the need for increased involvement of women in the legislative and executive responsibility. The workshop was held in Nairobi, Kenya in May, 2012.
In February, 2013, Hon. J. Charles, Hon. N. Esther and the Secretary, Mrs. Zelia attended the 5th Women Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference which was held in East London, South Africa. The theme for the conference was, “Are African Parliaments on Target Towards Attaining the 2015 Millennium Development Goals?” Topics for discussion were; the elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls, the challenges and achievements in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals and creating a Gender Sensitive Parliamentary Environment.
