4th November 2010 – Dr. Toornstra Calls on Speaker Herminie

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Dr. Patrick Herminie, today, received at the National Assembly building, Dr. Dick Toornstra who is the Director in the Office for Promotion of Parliamentary Democracy at the European Parliament.


Mr. Toornstra is here on a fact finding mission during which he will conduct an appraisal of the National Assembly to find out how the European Parliament can assist our Parliament to better fulfill it democratic responsibilities and meet the European Parliament’s prescribed parliamentary benchmarks. Both sides agreed that not only cooperation, but the building of capacity of both the Members of the National Assembly and staff of the Secretariat, should be strengthened. Mr. Toornstra further undertook to help the National Assembly of Seychelles to develop a modern Parliamentary ICT programme.


During his mission to Seychelles, Mr. Toornstra will also meet the Vice-President, Mr. Danny Faure, the two Leaders in the National Assembly, Hon. Marie-Louise Potter and Hon. Wavel Ramkalawan, as well as the Clerk, Ms. Veronique Bresson and the Chairpersons of the Assembly’s Committees.


The Office for Promotion of Parliamentary Democracy was created in 2007 to actively contribute to the strengthening of parliaments worldwide, by sharing expertise with Newly Emerging Democracies’ parliaments and by exchanging good practices and experiences.


Mr. Toornstra’s mission will last for four days, and he is expected to leave the country on 7th November, 2010.
