SEYCHELLES TO HOST THE 5TH REGIONAL MEETING OF THE ACP-EU JPA: EAST AFRICA
Members and Officials of the Africa, Caribbean, Pacific – European Union (ACP-EU) Joint Parliamentary Assembly will be arriving to Seychelles next week to attend the 5th Regional Meeting of the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly: East Africa which will be held at the Le Meridien Barbaron Hotel on 14 and 15 July.
Over the course of the meeting, participants will take part in a workshop on fisheries and development and they will also participate in discussions on issues affecting the East-Africa region such as peace and security, including governance and human rights, in the region, the fight against piracy, climate change and the status of Chagos Archipelago.
Other topics of discussion will be the regional integration and cooperation processes in East Africa region where focus will be on the roles of the East African Community (EAC), Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) and the Inter-Governmental Authority on development, as well as the Economic Partnership Agreement, Regional/Country Strategy Papers and the role of the National parliament.
Representatives from various African organizations namely the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), African Union (AU) and the Chagos Refugees Group, will also be present to facilitate the meeting’s working sessions.
It was at the 18th session of the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly in Luanda, Angola held last year, that the Joint ACP-EU Bureau agreed on the meeting being held here following a motion tabled at a session of the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly in 2007 by the chairman of the National Assembly’s International Affairs Committee Hon. Seychelles is a member of the ACP-EU committees on economic development, finance and trade.
