7th July 2010 – World Trade Delegation meets with the Honourable Speaker of the National Assembly

Wednesday 7th July, 2010

World Trade Delegation meets with the Hon’ble Speaker of the National Assembly

The delegation from the World Trade Organisation (WTO) paid a courtesy call on the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Dr. Patrick Herminie today.

Headed by Ms. Hilda Al-Hinai, who is the Chairperson of the Seychelles’ WTO accession working party, the delegation discussed the importance of the role of the National Assembly and its Members in the accession process of Seychelles to the WTO.

The Speaker assured the delegation that the National Assembly will do all that is necessary to support the quick accession of the Seychelles to the WTO.

Hon. Herminie also pointed out the complexity of the WTO and the need to strengthen capacity building of Members of the National Assembly, to further their understanding of the WTO, its Conventions and Agreements, the multilateral trading system, and in particular the ‘Doha Development Agenda’.

The Speaker said that ‘only through such technical assistance and capacity building can Members of Parliament seek to ensure government transparency in the accession process, and thus be in a position to make informed decisions.’

Both sides agreed that such capacity building should be done either through local workshops or attendance of Members to WTO Conferences and Forums.

The Speaker also noted the National Assembly’s active participation in the National Working Group on WTO accession, through the International Affairs Committee (IAC).

The WTO delegation expressed satisfaction at the level of commitment expressed by all stakeholders for the accession of the Seychelles to the WTO, and noted the success of the recent economic reforms.

The delegation then met with representatives from the Ruling Party and the Opposition, and also held talks with the IAC.
