Speaker on official visit to the Maldives
The Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Dr. Patrick Herminie was on a four day official visit to the Republic of Maldives.
The Hon’ble Speaker travelled to the Maldives on the invitation of His Excellency, Hon. Abdulla Shahid, the Speaker of the Parliament of Maldives.
During his visit, Hon. Herminie discussed the possibility of greater cooperation between the two Parliaments, given the fact that both countries are going through a period of similar constitutional and parliamentary changes.
In view of the fact that the Maldives and the Seychelles are the only two Commonwealth countries in the Indian Ocean to have a Presidential System of Government the Speaker proposed that cooperation be further strengthened through regular exchanges and study visits by both Members and staff of both Parliaments.
The Speaker also met and held discussions with the Parliamentary Group Leaders of the various political parties represented in Parliament of Maldives.
During the official visit, Hon. Dr. Herminie, also paid a courtesy call on the President of the Republic of Maldives, His Excellency, Mr. Mohamed Nasheed where they exchanged views on issues of mutual importance such as climate change, the fight against piracy, tourism and the delimitation of the continental shelf.
Speaker Herminie said ‘The visit was very fruitful, especially since both countries are in the same stage of democratic development, and thus have a lot to learn from each other.’
The official visit to the Maldives was principally to establish and promote parliamentary democracy between the two Parliaments of the Seychelles and the Maldives.
